MANILA (Reuters) - Tsunami-hit countries and aid agencies agreed on Friday to adopt a new mechanism to keep track of aid and cut down on corruption as they move from the relief phase of the disaster to longer-term rebuilding.
Three months after an earthquake triggered waves that killed or left missing more than 305,000 people, the worst-hit countries are struggling to coordinate huge inflows of aid and ensure that money pledged goes to the places it is most needed.
Haruhiko Kuroda, president of the Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) that hosted the conference attended by about 150 ministers and aid officials, said there had been an agreement to set up a special database to monitor aid."
