Colombo, 24 December,(Asiantribune.com): Red Cross has come forward to grant US$ 25 million for the construction of 10,000 permanent houses for the Tsunami affected families whose homes were either destroyed completely or partially destroyed.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday between the Government of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Federation) and the International Development Association (IDA). The MoU marks the beginning of a collaboration under which the Red Cross will commit $US 25 million towards the construction of a further 10,000 permanent houses for tsunami affected families.

Following revisions made by the Government in November regarding the buffer zone, an estimated 10,000 families may now opt to return to reconstruct their homes in areas where reconstruction of private homes had previously been restricted.
