MDP Pledges To House Tsunami Victims Within A Year: "The largest opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the first political party to officially unveil policies ahead of the country’s first multiparty polls, has pledged to house all 5,000 tsunami victims in a year.

Part of a housing policy unveiled today, presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) revealed plans to privatise the housing market and aims to “provide housing to every Maldivian” in five years."

But on Thursday, he probably endeared himself to the greens, as he also announced the constitution of a committee comprising national and international experts to study the repercussions of global warming in the state. "The cities on island face grievous threat of tsunami and, hence, Mumbai has to be more alert on this count. Increasing the level of the seabed is one of the measures that needs to be taken," he said.

"We are also thinking of making the use of solar energy and rain water harvesting compulsory for housing...
