The Red Cross didn’t ask Reid Ridgway to lend a hand in Thailand’s reconstruction following the tsunami. Nor did the United Nations or its special tsunami envoy, Bill Clinton.

The former Santa Cruz business owner and UC Santa Cruz graduate sought it out himself.

A Thai resident since late 2001, Ridgway, 43, said he felt compelled to do something — anything actually — so he started helping with the basics; treating the injured, hiring temporary workers and putting up displaced people in his home."
