urges donors to convert tsunami pledges into cash: "urges donors to convert tsunami pledges into cash
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) - The United Nations urged governments to make good on aid pledged to countries crippled by the Dec. 26 tsunami, saying it has received little more than a third of the donations promised.
Meanwhile, relief operations in Sri Lanka continued to be hampered by alleged corruption and incompetence, prompting the government to announce Tuesday that it was setting up a unit for survivors to air their grievances.
The number of people killed by the earthquake and tsunami it spawned in 11 nations ranged Tuesday from about 161,000 to 178,000 - most of them in Indonesia. "
