Tsunami2Within hours of the deadly tsunami hitting the coastlines of Southeast Asia in December 2004, organizations worldwide began soliciting funds to help with relief efforts. This solicitation occurred via the media, via direct mail and telephone, and over the Internet. The Internet accounted for over $350 million in tsunami relief contributions, eclipsing the previous online record of $211 million after the September 11 attacks in the United States. The tsunami online fundraising experience is a harbinger of some important changes in how individual stakeholders are making charitable contributions today, and in how nonprofit membership organizations need to adapt with respect to the role that the Internet is playing in those stakeholders’ lives."

UNITED NATIONS, July 14 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who heads for the U.N.'s Tsunami relief effort, said world governments had delivered on their promises of aid, but he would continue to press the international community not to turn away from the issue.

Reporting to the world organization's economic and social council (EcoSoc) Thursday, Clinton joked that Secretary General Kofi Annan had probably chosen him as the Tsunami special envoy to ensure that world governments delivered on their pledges because Clinton excels at making people feel guilty.

Clinton told the council the Tsunami relief effort had reached its most difficult stage, which was recovery and rebuilding. He also discussed disaster prevention and financial transparency."
