Two months after the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami, the aid effort has moved from supplying emergency food and shelter to rebuilding homes, schools and businesses. International organizations also hope to get survivors back to work, as the quickest way to help affected communities fully recover from the disaster.
When the tsunami swept onto the shores of 12 countries on December 26, it washed away not just human lives, but schools, hospitals, government offices, telephone and power lines - the infrastructure that holds towns and communities together. The waves tore up train tracks, and heaped tons of debris on roads and highways. They destroyed crops and smashed the fishing boats coastal communities depend on to make a living.
In the disaster's immediate aftermath, governments and international organizations pledged nearly $5 billion to help repair the damage."

The sole bright spot in the wake of the devastating tsunami on Dec. 26, 2004 that killed over 150,000 people throughout Southeast Asia was the swift and vigorous response of the international community, which came together to raise nearly $4 billion in disaster relief. At times, it seemed like the rich nations of the world were competing with one another to see who could pledge more to the tsunami’s victims.

As many as 69 percent of interviewees who made a donation chose to give their money to a private or non-profit organization, while 31 percent said they gave their money to the ROC government.

This could indicate that, after years of cultivation, local NGOs have gained the trust of society in general. Taiwanese tend to rely more on private establishments when it comes to entrusting their own resources with complete strangers. "

Philanthropy in Europe have published its second annual ranking of Europes biggest foundations, ranking the top 50 by grant expenditure and the top 20 by assets. Dominated by foundations from Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK, there are however a further eight countries represented in the listing: Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.

The ranking shows that the Wellcome Trust is still by far the biggest spender amongst European foundations, with giving rising to 806 million in 2003 up from over 700 million in 2003, despite assets falls of approximately 8.8 billion over the last four years, followed by Irelands Atlantic Philanthropies, founded in 1982 by Irish American Charles F. Feeney.

Europe vs America

The transatlantic gap is closing. In 2003, Europes top 50 foundations gave away over 3.8 billion in 2002, compared to grants from Americas biggest foundations of 6.4 billion. However, Europes foundations are a great deal more international in their giving than their American counterparts, in general spreading their grants across European and international borders. In contrast, of the 40 top American foundations, only 14 made any grants outside the US. Even the Italian banking foundations, traditionally parochial by statute in their giving, are beginning to extend their giving beyond regional or national borders. Speaking yesterday in Geneva, Wahlstrom urged governments to pay up. 'I don't understand,' Max said one evening last week as he got comfortable on the living room couch. I've known Max for almost ten years and whenever he speaks he makes me think. 'There was that terrible tsunami a month ago and all of a sudden people want to donate to charity. And they've never given to charity before. We have charities at home here that need help, that need money, but it's like they want to help the tsunami victims more than they want to help charities at home. I think maybe some people are donating money because other people are and they want to look good.'

Max's thoughts are, perhaps, similar to what a good number of people are thinking - but don't have it in their hearts to say. Nonetheless, it makes us reflect, doesn't it?

Then there's Aysha, who wanted to do something for the children who were left behind after the earthquake and tsunami hit. She took her flute and her dream and the magic began. WASHINGTON DC, Feb 4 (ANTARA-TNA) - The Indonesian government has offered private-sector parties in the US wishing to make donations for tsunami-hit Aceh and North Sumatra three alternative ways in which to channel their contributions, Ambassador to the US Soemadi DH Brotodiningrat said.
'So far the total amount of US private-sector donations has reached US$200 million,' Soemadi said here Thursday
He expained, the first way to channel the aid was through the Indonesian Red Cross and other non-governmental organizations and the second through a multi-donor trust fund to be set up by the Indonesian government in the near future in cooperation with the World Bank.
'The third way is by financing one of a number of aid projects to be offered by the Indonesian government,' the envoy said.
But there were also private parties that preferred to channel their assistance directly to rehabilitation projects in the tsunami-ravaged province, he noted.

Red Cross tsunami relief effort is now fully funded
February 3, 2005

By Deborah Medders

On Sunday, Dec. 26, the largest earthquake to strike the globe since 1964 rocked the ocean floor off the coast of Indonesia. The 9.0-magnitude quake triggered large tsunami waves that brought massive flooding and damage, and took more than 150,000 lives. The tsunami also left hundreds of thousands injured, missing, and homeless. As the death toll continues to climb, the fear and risk of malaria, respiratory infections, and dengue fever are becoming very real threats.

As a result of this tragedy, the American Red Cross has subsequently witnessed one of the greatest demonstrations of compassion and support in its 124-year history. Time and again Americans trust the Red Cross with their charitable donations. Since the first days after the devastation in South Asia, the American Red Cross has been the beneficiary of record-breaking contributions and has consistently informed the public about the money raised and how it is being used to provide relief. Assistance has been generous: but it is not always being well spent

“IT IS not enough to do good; one must do it the right way.” The adage, although coined by a Victorian politician, would serve well as a motto for the relief effort following December's tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Five weeks after the waves killed some 300,000 people, and left millions more without food, homes or livelihoods, the global outpouring of money and sympathy is only just beginning to ebb. Governments, firms and individuals have given more than many aid agencies can spend, perhaps $6 billion in all. But the results of this generosity have not always lived up to expectations—and there are more pitfalls ahead.

Audioconference: Crisis or No Crisis
Every day we see in the news, hear on the radio or get an e-mail describing another nonprofit in crisis. Government cuts, the war on terrorism, scandals, market uncertainties take a constant toll on nonprofits. Add to that the fundraising for the past election followed by an enormous outpouring of compassion for tsunami victims and a small domestic nonprofit may be forgiven for feeling, 'But what about us?'
In this audioconference, Kim Klein will address how to stay focused and turn these negative times into positive ones for your organization. She believes that organizations can not only survive, but thrive in these times if they follow some conventional wisdom and go outside their comfort zone and seek new strategies. If the main question on your mind every morning when you come to work is 'What should I do?', then this seminar is for you."

Tsunami Relief Not Expected to Impact Local Charities

Despite the more than half-billion dollars pledged by Americans to aid Southeast Asian victims of the earthquake and tsunami, which does not include the $350 million pledged by the United States itself, local charities do not expect it to negatively impact their fundraising efforts.

“Disasters like this raise public awareness and sensitivity towards human needs,” explained Martha Schiedler, president of the 200-member West Suburban Philanthropic Network (WSPN). “Even thought many area companies and individuals are supporting these relief efforts, they are still supporting their favorite local charities. In fact, many charities experienced strong year-end results.”

Tom DeWalle, director of development for Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, and Amy Van Polen, development director for Child’s Voice School, both reported healthy year-end results for their organizations, as did many other fund-raisers attending a WSPN workshop Jan. 20 in Aurora.

As many as 69 percent of interviewees who made a donation chose to give their money to a private or non-profit organization, while just 31 percent said they gave their money to the ROC government.
This could indicate that, after years of cultivation, local NGOs have gained the trust of society in general. It is a sociological fact that Taiwanese tend to rely more on private establishments when it comes to entrusting their own resources with complete strangers."
